How Person Centred Software Helps St Andrews Village Deliver Exceptional Care

Case Study

St Andrews Village in Canberra first started on their journey with Mobile Care Monitoring 3 years ago having discovered Person Centred Software during an aged care conference.

With previous experience using other digital care systems, the facility was already on their way to becoming fully digital, however they had begun to notice a number of critical errors being made by carers during the documentation process, which they were keen to address. This led them to implement Person Centred Software’s Mobile Care Monitoring, and straight away the facility noticed a huge difference.

How Person Centred Software stands out from other software providers

Deborah BoothCEO of St Andrews Village, testified:

“Person Centred Software has given us everything that we wanted in a software.

There are so many differences between their Mobile Care Monitoring and other digital care systems that we used previously.

The framework of the digital platform, the usefulness of the software, the care plan integration, the easy-to-understand icons and the fact that it’s operated from a mobile device so staff don’t have to queue for a computer…All of these things are fundamentally and irretrievably different.”

“Previously we were getting a lot of critical errors in documentation. Now though, evidencing care is easy using Person Centred Software’s icon-based system. Mobile Care Monitoring will convert data inputted into a sensible message that then goes straight into the notes.

There’s also been a reduction in spelling errors, which is important especially with the Relatives Gateway being accessible to the families of residents. Any errors can be harmful in deconstructing trust, so it’s important we avoid these at all costs.”

Giving carers the gift of time

As well as mitigating the risk of errors, St Andrews Village recognises that the mobile nature of the software has been helpful in enabling carers to spend more time with residents by reducing the amount of time spent documenting care from a computer – a task which previously had to be completed at the end of a shift rather than on-the-go.

“Thanks to Mobile Care Monitoring, we are able to spend more time with the residents. At the end of the day especially we have found there are more carers on the floors, whereas they used to be in offices completing their documentation.”

Residents, too, have been able to benefit from the mobile nature of the software, with carers now able to talk them through their daily care plans and to make modifications where necessary, more easily.

“Mobile Care Monitoring enables care staff to sit with their residents and to talk them through their plans for the day, really enabling them to provide person-centred care. If a resident wants to change the plans at all, for example to move their shower time, care staff can easily amend this in the software.

Another benefit is that if residents deny a particular service repeatedly, this can be documented too, which is very helpful for enabling us to fill the accreditation standards.”

Integration with other innovative technologies

With a number of their residents living with dementia, St Andrews Village has also been able to optimise an integration between Mobile Care Monitoring and PainChek – an innovative software that uses AI and facial recognition technology to identify the presence and quantify the severity of pain in people unable to verbally communicate discomfort, through the measurement of micro facial expressions.

“Any integration is helpful in improving efficiencies for our staff because it stops them having to document information twice on different software.

The integration between Person Centred Software and PainChek has been particularly useful for us though because a lot of our residents are in the first and second stages of cognitive loss due to dementia.

Not only has the integration made our documentation process so much easier, but we can also use the integration to monitor and analyse resident behaviours.

This is helpful because if we have someone with triggered behaviour, we can go back and look at when the last PainChek assessment was done, check for patterns and act much more quickly to help ease the resident of any discomfort, documenting the outcome through Mobile Care Monitoring.”

Deborah also credits Person Centred Software for “always being open to discussing the integration of new tools that aren’t already available on the software.”

Go paperless

Deborah’s advice to facilities still using paper documentation? Simply put: “Don’t.”

“There are too many risks. Paper can easily be misplaced. People using paper to document care will lose track of what has and hasn’t been done too, whereas those using digital care monitoring will receive red-flag alerts if anything is missed giving them the opportunity to intervene and correct this early on.”

The benefits of going digital, Deborah feels, far outweigh the costs.

“Person Centred Software has been very easy to work with and to implement. Ours is a great and productive partnership and I would recommend them to anybody.”
