PainChek® is the World's First AI powered Pain Assessment tool. Quickly, accurately and reliably assess and manage pain for people living with dementia, providing a voice for those who need it most.
Pain often goes unrecognised and under-treated in people living with dementia, in fact, 50% of people living with dementia experience pain on a regular basis. Assessing pain for people with dementia is hugely challenging as it relies of non-verbal pain indicators as a result of their difficulty in self-reporting pain levels. This provides a huge challenge to care teams and, when operating on a paper-based system, requires extensive training and experience. PainChek® reduces this burden and empowers care providers to effectively assess pain in minutes.
PainChek® is a smartphone based medical device which uses facial analysis and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify involuntary micro-facial expressions associated with pain. Combined with other non-facial indicators, PainChek® enables fast, effective and reliable pain scores, with the whole assessment process taking less than 2 minutes to complete.
This supports care providers in ensuring their residents are receiving the correct interventions and are not allowing pain to go untreated. PainChek® was born out of Curtin University in Perth, Australia, where research indicated the need for an effective pain assessment tool for people living with dementia. Since then, PainChek® has been the subject of clinical studies where it has been praised for its effectiveness. It was also been granted CE mark clearance for use as a medical device in Europe.
