One approach to care planning across a growing care group

Amicura operates ten care homes across the UK, providing residential, nursing, dementia, respite and palliative care for older people.

As the group grew, different homes used different ways to record care. Some relied on paper records, while others used digital systems that staff did not always find easy to use.

We spoke with Brendan O'Neill, Technology Development Manager at Amicura.

Brendan explained that different homes were recording care in different ways, making it harder to achieve consistency across the group. Managers needed better visibility, care teams needed simpler processes and the organisation needed stronger evidence of care delivery.

Ease of use was crucial. If staff found the system difficult to use, adoption would suffer and the benefits of standardisation would be lost.

Amicura needed a solution that would simplify care recording, reduce administration and help establish a consistent standard across every home.

Easier recording, better oversight and safer admissions

Amicura began rolling out PCS Care at The Rivers, a 50-bed care home, before extending the system to additional homes across the group.

Using handheld devices and an intuitive, icon-led interface, care teams could record information more quickly and confidently. Care records became easier to complete, easier to review and easier to evidence when needed.

Managers also gained a clearer view of what was happening across the home.

At The Rivers, Care Home Manager Julie Whitaker found she could quickly review care activity and see what had happened throughout the day, even when she was away from the building.

Instead of relying on paper files, manual updates or end-of-shift reporting, managers had access to up-to-date information whenever they needed it. That visibility helped leaders stay close to care quality and make decisions with greater confidence.

The system also helped create a stronger foundation for new admissions. With care information stored in one place, teams could build a clearer picture of residents' needs and provide safer, more personalised support from day one.

Alongside better day-to-day recording, PCS Care gave Amicura stronger evidence of care delivery and a more consistent approach across its homes.
