Every August, #NationalWellnessMonth is celebrated around the world, encouraging people to prioritise self-care, reduce stress and adopt healthy habits that enhance their mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing.

Founded by Live Love Spa in 2018, National Wellness Month has grown into a nationwide movement, inspiring thousands to take proactive steps toward their health and wellness.

For those working in care homes, it's essential to recognise the importance of ongoing wellness efforts. Let's make a dedicated commitment to prioritise the wellbeing of care home residents throughout the entire year!

By promoting a supportive and healthy environment, we can enhance their quality of life and ensure they receive the compassion and care they need and deserve.

Boost the physical and emotional health of those you care for

As a care home activities coordinator, your role is crucial in facilitating meaningful experiences that focus on movement, mindfulness, and relaxation. As a care provider, this month serves as a perfect reminder to prioritise the wellbeing of both residents and care home staff.

By promoting activities that enhance joy and connection, you can significantly improve the quality of life for everyone involved.

To aid you in this mission, take advantage of our Wellness & Activities Platform, which offers a wealth of resources and specialist activity programmes tailored for both residents and care staff. This platform empowers you to introduce engaging activities and workshops that build community, encourage healthy habits, and ultimately contribute to a happier, healthier environment for all!

Seize this opportunity to make a lasting difference during National Wellness Month!

"Each of our care homes uses Person Centred Software's Wellness and Activities Platform, which provides fun and engaging activities and enables our activity coordinators to develop skills and improve every aspect of their wellbeing delivery, residents' outcomes, and overall wellbeing.

The platform provides a wide range of activities that can be tailored to each individual, allowing for engaging and inclusive experiences for everyone.''

Prioritising self-care

Our Wellness and Activities Platform offers an array of enriching activities that empower residents to prioritise their self-care. Among these, our 'Guided Self-Care Meditation' session stands out as a favourite. This session is thoughtfully designed to help residents reconnect with themselves, gently restore their energy, and reinforce that they are worthy of the best care, compassion, and rest.

Led by Ruth, whose soothing voice helps to create a tranquil environment, these sessions focus on mindfulness, wellbeing, and relaxation. Ruth guides residents through meditation practices, allowing them to choose between simply listening or engaging with a calming video that enhances their experience!

Engaging in self-care meditation offers numerous benefits for older adults, including reduced stress and anxiety, improved sleep quality, better pain management, and enhanced cognitive function. It also promotes emotional wellbeing, resilience, and a greater sense of self-awareness, empowering individuals to embrace each day with confidence and clarity.

A constant flow of activities

"With the introduction of the Wellness and Activities Platform, we now have a dynamic solution at our fingertips. This platform allows staff to easily explore a wide range of activities tailored to various interests and preferences.

If you ever find yourself lacking ideas or need to engage a resident who may be feeling bored in their room and reluctant to join group activities, you can easily explore thousands of activities on the platform.

Additionally, activities can be displayed directly on the residents' TVs, offering them a fun and interactive experience right in their living space.  Best of all, Person Centred Software continuously adds new activities, ensuring that there is always something fresh and exciting for residents to try, keeping things interesting and encouraging participation."

Reducing stress

Our Wellness and Activities Platform also features an extensive range of engaging activities designed to alleviate stress. From energising exercise and calming yoga sessions to creative arts and crafts, there's something for everyone.

For example, this summer, one of our most popular activities has been the "Make a Recycled Bird Feeder" activity! Both residents and staff have enjoyed crafting these unique bird feeders using materials that would otherwise go to waste, such as washed-out juice cartons! This versatile activity can be easily adapted to accommodate groups with differing needs and abilities, ensuring that everyone can join in the fun. Not only does this activity encourage creativity, but it also encourages environmental awareness by promoting recycling and upcycling.

By the end of the activity, each resident leaves with a personalised bird feeder to hang in their outdoor space, providing a delightful way to observe and support local wildlife. Overall, this engaging craft has brought joy and a sense of accomplishment to all involved!

Participating in arts and crafts activities can be a highly effective method for reducing stress. Engaging in creative pursuits such as painting, drawing, knitting, or crafting allows residents to focus their minds on the task at hand, providing a break from everyday worries. Research has demonstrated that these creative activities can significantly lower stress levels by promoting relaxation and enhancing overall wellbeing.

Additionally, the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing an art project can boost self-esteem and contribute to a more positive outlook on life.

Helping to keep residents mentally active and engaged

"We implemented PCS's Wellness and Activities Platform to enhance our residents' physical and emotional wellbeing, and it has done just that!

Equipping our activity coordinators with the Wellness and Activities platform improved the lives of the residents under our care. The exercise sessions improved mobility and helped residents stay engaged and active. In particular, the strength and balance exercises and interactive live exercise sessions have proven effective.

These exercise sessions also played a crucial role among residents, leading to a notable decrease in falls since implementation. Among many other things, the platform offers specially designed reminiscence newspapers for older adults and people living with dementia, themed calendars, fun quizzes, which our residents love and virtual tours, both of which provide a stimulating experience.

These enjoyable activities are crucial in keeping residents mentally active and engaged, vital for their overall wellbeing.''

Our Wellness and Activities Platform is designed to promote and sustain healthy habits by offering a wide range of engaging activities that inspire wellness.

For example, one particularly popular activity for care home residents is our vibrant 'Sunrise Fruit Skewers' recipe. These delightful skewers not only provide a refreshing treat but also offer a range of benefits, including promoting healthy eating habits, enhancing fine motor skills, and providing opportunities for social interaction and reminiscing. It can also be a fun and engaging activity that stimulates the senses and encourages creativity.

Or, if you want to elevate your residents' experience with an exciting exercise session, don't miss out on joining Mr. Motivator!
