Mallands Residential Care Home, a 38 bed care home in Newton Abbot, has been using Mobile Care Monitoring since February 2015. Roz Wills, the manager has over 25 years’ experience of providing residential care for the elderly, and manages a team of 25 day and night care assistants. The system provides Roz with confidence in the care that her team deliver to their residents, as she knows that unless she is alerted, nothing is being missed by her team. She says ‘I have complete trust in the system – if I have a red flag alert, I can immediately chase staff.’
Prior to using Mobile Care Monitoring, Roz explains that Mallands kept their paper records in folders, which often became disorganised and ‘trying to go back through all the paperwork for safeguarding enquiries was difficult’. Handovers were time-consuming while using paper records. Roz says that ‘staff spent 6 hours a day writing handover notes; two carers wrote up handover notes for every shift, taking both people an hour each time’.
With Mobile Care Monitoring, staff have found that updating records is ‘much quicker as charts and reports automatically get changed as the care is evidenced so all records are up to date’. It is also ‘easier to know when reviews are due because of automatic alerts in the system and everything is linked together’. With time saved on maintaining paper records, staff can spend more time with residents. Roz estimates that staff save three quarters of the time they used to spend writing handover notes and records are now much more detailed and easy to locate whenever anyone needs to access them.

How we helped
Mallands had a step by step implementation of Mobile Care Monitoring, beginning with using the Care App to evidence care, followed by care planning. Roz found that staff took to the system quickly, ‘they started using the Care App as soon as they had training and it quickly became second nature’.
Roz advocates Mobile Care Monitoring in her local area, which has led to many professionals and care home managers becoming familiar with the benefits of the system. Roz remains as enthusiastic as the day the system was installed, as new features to complement and enhance the system are added regularly, providing a platform which enables Roz and her team to spend more time caring for their residents.
