The Personal Demographics Service (PDS)

Validate and trace a resident’s NHS number

What is Personal Demographics Service (PDS)?

The Personal Demographics Service (PDS) is the national electronic database of NHS patient details.

The PDS uses our Health and Social Care Network (HSCN) connection, which provides a reliable and efficient way for health and care organisations to access and exchange electronic information.

How does The Personal Demographics Service (PDS) work with our Digital Care System?

Using the National Record Locator, the Digital Care System can validate and trace a resident's NHS number and patient identifiers (such as name, date of birth, address etc.) - this enables providers to ensure that their data is accurate. It also facilitates integration with NHS services and other software solutions used in care, such as eMAR, to provide a complete service to users.

What is needed to access the Personal Demographics Service (PDS)?

All we need is your NHS ODS (Organisation Data Service) codes to enable the endpoints set up with NHS Digital that provides the validation service via the PDS.

On the picture, the green tick means that Rachel's NHS number is valid (if it's a red cross, it means it's invalid) - this has been achieved by linking the Digital Care System to the Spine Mini Service Provider for Personal Demographics. This service lets health and social care providers access essential information.
