Environmental sustainability in the workplace

Discover how to reduce energy consumption across your health or care service

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has changed how it regulates all health and social care providers and is now using the Single Assessment Framework (SAF).

One of the key changes within 'Well-led' is the quality statement titled Environmental Sustainability – sustainable development. This new area will look at any negative impact of providers' activities on the environment.

The CQC states that this quality statement will be assessed in NHS trusts (at trust level) and as part of the ICS assessments for the first year of the Single Assessment Framework (SAF). However, during the first year, the CQC will not assess the environmental sustainability quality statement in other service types.

Nevertheless, care providers are encouraged to adopt sustainable practices and prioritise environmental sustainability as a standard approach.

This proactive preparation will not only help ensure you're ready for future assessments in this area should the guidelines change but also improve the quality of life for residents.

Furthermore, eco-friendly care homes are becoming increasingly important for families when selecting a care home for their loved ones - having a clear sustainability plan can make your care home more attractive to potential residents and drive business growth.

Additionally, your care home can achieve cost savings by implementing sustainable changes.

Why is environmental sustainability training important for health and care providers?

Environmental sustainability training is vital for health and care providers because it equips you and your staff with the knowledge and skills to integrate sustainable practices into daily operations.

These practices reduce your organisation's impact on the environment, which is vital for a healthier future - using sustainability measures can improve health outcomes for residents and patients, including improving the quality of life for staff and the wider community.

When health and care providers are trained in environmental sustainability, they learn how to apply these practices effectively, helping them achieve their Net Zero goals more quickly.
