Is your care home ready for the digital switchover?

Working towards a digital future

Our world today is undeniably shaped by digital technology. We are witnessing the rapid evolution of new tools and platforms that influence nearly every aspect of our lives.

From the extensive use of social media that connects individuals globally to AI tools that are transforming various industries, technology plays a crucial role in our everyday experiences.

In the world of social care

mcare-digital-care-planningIn the world of social care, we see a significant transformation driven by innovations such as digital social care record systems, which streamline the documentation and sharing of resident information for better coordination of care.

Additionally, electronic medication administration record (eMAR) systems are playing a crucial role in ensuring safe and accurate medication management. Visitor management systems are improving security and visitor tracking in care homes, while staff dependency tools are helping organisations assess workforce needs; the list goes on.

(And, yes, we offer all these digital tools for care providers, plus more, so feel free to reach out if you want to enhance your organisation!)

As we continue embracing these technological advancements, it's exciting to consider what innovations might emerge next to enhance our lives.

The transition to digital phone services

One of the next major developments on the horizon is the transition to digital phone services. This switchover involves replacing traditional analogue telephone systems with digital technology, which promises to enhance connectivity, improve call quality, and offer additional features such as video calls and instant messaging capabilities.

As we prepare for this shift, it will be important to understand the benefits it brings, as well as how to adapt to the new systems for both personal and professional communication.analogue-telephone

When is the digital switchover, and how do I prepare my care home?

The digital switchover scheduled for 2027 represents a pivotal moment in telecommunications, marking the definitive end of the traditional analogue phone network.

As the country embarks on a full transition to an all-IP (Internet Protocol) service, this technological advancement, spearheaded by Openreach, will involve the discontinuation of both the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).

By January 2027, all existing services must be fully migrated to IP platforms.

For care homes, this transition is particularly critical. They must establish and activate a reliable broadband and telephony service before the switchover date. Doing so is vital to prevent any phone service disruption that could impact residents' communication and support.

The upcoming digital switchover will fundamentally transform how phone communication works by replacing traditional copper-based phone lines with advanced Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. This transition means that all voice calls will be transmitted over the internet rather than through the older analogue lines we have relied on for decades. This change is significant for personal and business phone calls and various systems and devices that depend on these phone lines.

Specifically, the following systems will be affected:

  • Intruder and lift alarms
  • Telecare systems
  • CCTV systems
  • Emergency red phones
  • Epos machines
  • Some half-hourly electricity meters

You will also need to switch the above to digital systems, as they will cease working too!

The transition to digital services is poised to profoundly impact care homes, particularly those inadequately prepared for this shift. Care homes that depend on outdated systems, such as traditional landline telephones, alarm systems, and emergency call systems, may face significant challenges during this transition.

It's essential to be proactive - prepare and explore all available options as soon as possible. If you have the opportunity to migrate now, take it. This proactive approach can help you avoid potential issues that may arise down the line!

Remember: Your care home must ensure its newly adopted digital systems adhere to data protection regulations, particularly the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This compliance is essential when managing sensitive resident information, which includes personal health records and other confidential data.

Digital systems can significantly improve data security, but care homes must proactively implement robust safeguards to protect against cyber threats. This includes selecting reputable software solutions that offer strong security features and establishing comprehensive protocols for data management.

Care homes should consider the following measures:

  • Implement encryption: Encryption technologies protect sensitive data, making it difficult for unauthorised parties to access or interpret.

  • Secure Cloud storage: Storing data in secure cloud environments can provide reliable backup solutions and enhanced security features, such as advanced firewalls and access controls.

  • Regular cybersecurity training for staff: Educating care staff on the importance of data security and the potential risks of cyber threats is vital. Training should cover best practices for identifying phishing attempts, secure password management, and safely handling sensitive information. By implementing these strategies, care homes can protect resident data and maintain compliance with the regulators, ultimately fostering a secure and trustworthy environment for residents and their families.
